Dads, today I celebrate you as teachers. In fact, I believe it is one of your most important roles. Fathers are always teaching, continually by example, and most of the time without even knowing they are doing so. In this regard, I have seen some masterful work. I have witnessed dads teach empathy, self-control, kindness, determination, and respect – all through modeled behaviors. Of course, moms teach these same qualities as well, but do so in a different way.
Although all dads teach, special props go out to male educators who chose to step into the role of surrogate father for so many kids needing this figure in their lives. Not only do they foster healthy cognitive and social-emotional growth, but they model the importance of education – which is huge.
This past week I presented at the state-wide TEPSA conference and my heart smiled as looked around and saw so many positive male role models around me. I have no doubt each of them send amazing messages to countless elementary age students with whom they work.
So, reach out to some father-figures in your life today and show them some love. Whether they are certified educators or simply teachers through their everyday interactions with kids, their presence makes the world a better place.
Happy Father’s Day.
