Communal Strength
There is something incredible about being in community with others. Don’t believe me? Scan Facebook. You will see endless posts about time spent with families and friends over the holidays – cooking, traveling, shopping, watching football games, laughing. Even extroverts like me need some solitude, but hands down, connecting with others is the better deal.
Last night, my wife and I hosted a Christmas party for our church choir family. I believe we had about 30-40 attend. We ate a ton of food, shared stories, and thanks to the blessing, even celebrated in song. It was a great evening spent with great people. It was also a good reminder to me of the importance of community. I firmly believe we are not meant to be alone.
Want to give a great Christmas gift this year? Reach outside your regular circle and find ways to connect with individuals who might not have a strong community of support. We all know co-workers, neighbors, school families and others who fall into this category. And if you are intentional about extending this act into the new year, it will be a simple way to spread the holiday season of goodwill beyond the holiday itself.
Now to get ready for next weekend when we host our family Christmas gathering. We will once again have a full house – with one key difference. My son will bring at least one of his dogs, and I believe our niece might also bring her furry beast. No doubt these pups will join forces with our three dogs and romp around in one pack. Hmmm…. Coincidental? I think not.
Merry Christmas, virtual community friends.
