A fresh start. A clean slate. A new beginning. Kicking off a new semester affords all of us the opportunity to strengthen our skills, sharpen our saws, and adjust our attitudes. What’s your New Year’s resolution?
Every year something happens and I find myself wanting a “redo” button. I wish I had handled a situation differently, treated a child better, or just kept a better balance between work and home. This is probably why I get a small spring in my step each January and August. I know I’ll make mistakes, that’s a given, but it sure is nice to know that after a refreshing break, I’ll have a chance to start from scratch with a new perspective. I can’t help but think this is the wish of the majority of parents and children with whom we all work.
I really believe people of all ages do the best they are able given the skills at their disposal. I also know that developmental levels influence behavior. So, maybe the best goal I can have is just to be a little more patient and understanding with my students, parents, colleagues and family. I hope you have a fantastic spring semester with minimal “redo” wishes.
