Rescue Me
In church this morning we heard about the relief efforts afforded to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. I’m thinking you might be able to relate if you are a teacher or parent. At some point, we have all been in the path of a Hurricane Harvey… or Caleb… or Dante… or in my case, Micah.
I’ve had to learn the hard way; I can’t always be the hero. I can’t always be all things to all people. At times, I’m the one who needs rescuing. The person who knows this best would be my better half, who for almost 25 years has afforded me relief when I was drowning in the tides of my relationship with my second born.
I met with three sets of parents this week requesting input on the behavioral concerns of their children. In each case, a pattern emerged – one parent was able to intervene and de-escalate the situation much easier than their counterpoint. I can relate – unfortunately, to the latter.
We all need relief from time to time. Unfortunately, our “I can handle this” perspective sometimes blinds us to the reality of acknowledging the need. The beauty of being in a community (school or home) is there are people around us to step in to help. Don’t be afraid to accept it. Chances are good you will have the opportunity to return the favor sooner than you think.
