Just a word of caution for all you teachers: Your work is not your home. Your job should not be your life. I may be stating the obvious, but often times, in an attempt to do our job well, we devote way too much time to it. Dont get me wrong, it is natural to put in a lot of hours preparing for the start of school. However, it is important to not let those long hours turn into habitual patterns. It is hard to enjoy a job you resent, and that is exactly what will happen if you allow the work to consume you.
Balance is the key. I feel as though I lost that balance this summer and I will be working diligently to regain it with the start of school tomorrow. I recommend setting a realistic boundary or goal that forces you to step away from your work. Some options:
Leave school by a specific time.
Eat dinner as a family.
Head back to the gym on a regular basis.
To the best of your ability, don’t take work home.
If devoted time indicates importance, I have a real problem. My goal for this school year is to focus on those aspects of my life that are most important, and let my time and energy be a true reflection of this. I hope you are able to do the same.
